This marks the start of a new section for the Anonymous Foodie, Cocktails and Drinks! A good cocktail is something that is easy to make if you take care otherwise you’ll end up concocting something you’d seriously regret.
I start this series with a personal favourite of mine, the Mojito. The Mojito is a traditional Cuban cocktail which became popular in the United States during the late 1980s, and has since found it’s way across the globe.
A Mojito is traditionally made of five ingredients: spearmint, rum, sugar (traditionally sugar cane juice), lime, and carbonated water.
The combination of sweetness and refreshing citrus are intended to mask the kick of the rum, and tops my list of must haves during the summer.
Ingredients
- Fresh mint (this is the base for a good Mojito, so ensure you have lots of it )
- Limes ( one per drink )
- Clear rum
- Club Soda ( though I prefer using sprite )
- Pure granulated sugar ( Sugar cane extract if you want to go authentic)
- Ice ( try using cubes not crushed ice as it melts slower )
Steps
- Make sure you have a good muddler the cocktail’s success depends on the blending of the lime and mint flavors.
- Cut the limes into quarters and pick the mint of the leaves ( the mint has to be fresh )
- Muddle a generous pinch of mint and about two or three lime wedges ( depending how you like your drink ) in the bottom of a tall mojito glass, cocktail shaker, or a mixing receptacle.
- Add the sugar to this mix while you’re muddling it.
- Fill the glass with about 45ml ( anything less and you’re being cheap
) of white or light rum. - Shake or stir the mixture until fully blended.
- Fill the remainder of the glass with soda water ( or sprite ) .
- Garnish with a lime wedge, and some mint leaves.
- Serve and Enjoy!
