This review starts with a disclaimer, Chinese food isn’t my first choice when I decide to step out of the cosy confines of my house to grab a bite. However I must say my trip to China a year or so ago opened my palate up to fresh tastes that frankly even the best 5 star hotels haven’ t been able to replicate.
Right, so where was I… This review focuses on a restaurant called Chung Wah,situated at White Field which lets face it is more than a stone throw from any part of town.
The Experience:
The restaurant is housed in what I presume is a serviced apartment that is also home to a parlor and a few other eateries. Now if you are the kind of person who wants to club a haircut with your lunch break this might just be the place for you.
The decor is nice and clean and not garish at all which makes it easier to concentrate on your food ( and the people you’re with ).
Their service is quite decent however if you are unlucky enough to get a waiter who seems to be at a complete loss, and they do have a few of those, your experience might suffer a little.
To Drink:
Don’t expect anything fancy apart from fizzy drinks, iced tea and mocktails! A note of caution here, their ice isn’t very clean ( at least the last time i went there ) so be careful .
To Eat:
While their range of sea food is limited to fish and prawns shouldn’t worry too much as their lamb and chicken section more than makes up for it.
Their appetizer section is just as wide starting from Chinese fried chicken, drunken chicken wings , the always classic chicken momos’ to the more spicy chicken lollipop’s and chicken chilly basil.
If you are in the mood for something crisp and oily I would suggest trying the dragon rolls, these come in both vegetarian and non-vegetarian.
I’m a fan of the clear soups though their hot and sour chicken isn’t bad.
The vegetarians needn’t worry either as there is enough of a choice, crispy chili potato, golden fried baby corn and much more.
Once you get to the main course its a standoff between noodles and rice. I’m partial to steamed rice as it allows the flavour of your accompanying dishes to stand out. You however always have the option of choosing from a wide range of noodles and rice to accompany your main course.
The Chicken Thai red curry is quite nice however it’s far from the best I’ve had. Their hot and spicy chicken again is nothing spectacular and is more or less what you’re probably used to.
It’s always important to have veggies on your table, it adds a level of crunchiness and color that adds to your whole dinning experience and a plate of tossed veggies is ideal to give you this balance.
There is always the spicy gravy option and the vegetable balls in hot sauce go well with the steamed rice.
While I don’t have pictures of their lamb dishes they are quite good and would recommend trying something dry to offset the spicy gravy I’m sure you’re planning to order.
Finishing Up:
They don’t have much of a choice when it comes to deserts apart from darshan ( string noodles deep friend and coated with honey and seame seeds ) with ice cream and some pastries. However if it were up to me I would recommend forgoing the desert here and picking some up and your local icecream parlour.
The Fine Print:
Type : Restaurant
Cuisine: Chinese ( though they do have a smattering of other south east Asian cuisines )
Meal Details: Lunch and Dinner
Alcohol? : Yes
Meal for 2: A “meal” for 2 would set you back around Rs 800
Cards? : Yes
Gripes:
The waiters do seem a little confused at times, and the Air Conditioning has a way of breaking down occasionally but otherwise a decent place to grab Chinese food if you live or work close by.
And yes, please avoid their ice creams.
