Whenever I come across a new restaurant concept I have to admit it really peaks my interest. So when news broke about a restaurant that planned to only serve dishes that were egg based there was no doubt that this was something worth exploring.
Welcome to the Egg Factory, a restaurant tucked away in the recesses off St.Marks road where frankly, finding a parking space is a nightmare
The Experience:
After you manage to put the dirty entrance past you and make your way into the restaurant the ambience is pleasantly surprising.
The idea presumably is to give it a factory like appearance, they’ve pulled this off remarkably well with the stone floors, steel chairs ( which have cushions so don’t worry ) and very dark colors.
[flickr]photo:3578686668[/flickr]The details find their way down all the way to the cutlery holder which shows how much thought went into putting this together.
Their menu cards are rather interesting as well written in a number of different languages and I must confess that even though they are situated on the noisy St. Marks road their location is such that absolutely no noise trickles through.
To Drink:
They have a range of hot and cold beverages though I must warn you that their juices aren’t fresh and come straight out of a tetra back. Definitely a buzz kill if you expect fresh fruit juice in the mornings.
Their coolers and smoothies are rather nice but take a careful look at the ingredients lest you end up with something that looks like this…
To Eat:
Their offerings are broadly divided into 4 sections, Eggsamplers, Eggxotica, Eggxpectations (drinks ) and Eggxhilarative Snacks, and yes before you get all bug-eyed wondering what each of these mean continue reading
The Eggsamplers are essentially omlettes ( served with toast, butter and jam ) and Frittatas which are thick 3 egg italian omlettes served with garlic bread. ( I honestly don’t know the different between the two )
Of the list that’s available I would recommend trying the ultimate veggie omlette or the mushroom, spinach and feta option.
The Frittatas are reasonably decent as well however I would advise against choosing the cilantro chilly sauce option. The sauce is very overpowering and you can barely taste the omlette underneath.
The Eggxotica is, well a little more exotic. Starting from the Kutthu Parota right now do the Egg biryani and Desi Penne Pasta and Eggs.
The one dish that does sound interesting is the Moo Shu Rou which is chinese style scrambled eggs with diced soya ham, spring onions ina mild soya sauce.
Last on the list is the Eggxhilarative Snacks which have options ranging from Bun Omlette to the Boiled Egg Bhurgi.
The second time around I get to try some of their more “mainstream” dishes, which are essentially eaten around lunch and I have to say they were quite nice.
The pesto and mayo pasta with soft egg was cooked just right and the mayo did take the edge off what could have been an extremely overpowering dish.
The Cannelloni stuffed with mushrooms, red bell pepper and eggs was a nice dish and if you are a fan of cheese this is definitely something for you.
The Huevos Rancheros- Red bell peppers, tomatoes and onions with spices and served with tortillas was interesting however it lacked volume. Tossing in some sausages would have really helped.
Finishing up:
The caramel custard was very nicely put together and I would highly recommend ordering a plate after you’re done with the meal.
The Fine Print:
Type : Restaurant and Cafe
Cuisine: Mexican, Continental and Indian
Meal Details: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner
Alcohol? : No
Meal for 2: A “meal” for 2 would set you back around Rs 300-400
Cards? : Yes
Gripes:
A very restrictive menu ( apart from their endless list of egg based dishes) , and no fresh juices. Would it really hurt to have some good ol bacon and sausages for breakfast?
