After eating at all the so called upscale restaurants there is really something to be said about appreciating good simple food, my Maiya’s experience was that in a nutshell. It’s located in a section of the city that I very rarely visit, however I am glad the opportunity to try this place out presented itself.
We had a reservation for 1:30 but in true “IST” ( Indian Standard Time ) fashion we were made to wait for over 30 minutes before a place opened up. I do not like waiting for a seat when I’m hungry, and I’m sure most of you share that sentiment. However, the fact that there was a huge waiting line did increase my expectations of the restaurant.
The Experience:
Located in a not so quiet section of Jayanagar, Maiya’s is in a spanking new building that was still under construction when I ate there! Though it must be said that the place was rather clean, minus the bits of concrete and plaster in the corridors.
The one thing that I really got a kick out of was the foot operated taps in the bathroom, I really wish I had taken a picture.
To Drink:
Don’t expect much apart from the standard non-alcoholic soft drinks and juices.
To Eat:
While there is a variety of options to choose from, the fixed “thali” meals are always the best to opt for. Hell, there is a reason why every other person seems to be eating it!
There are two options , the regular meal at Rs75 and the “Special” which with a larger plate and over 20 individual items will set you back Rs 125. Not bad huh?
So let’s dig in shall we?
The first to arrive was the welcome drink, ginger sugar cane juice in a silver glass and shortly thereafter the large thali plate.
You are then served two dry vegetables, beans and some sort of a dal based vegetable which I couldn’t bring myself to eat after I tasted it. The potato and mixed veg gravies were really nice though.
The Puri’s came next, served hot and dripping with oil. Very unhealthy but extremely tasty.
[flickr]photo:3546490990[/flickr]As is traditional after having devoured your puris with the vegetables you need to move on to the rice. In this phase of the meal you get some vegetable pulao with raita and some very spicy chips and vada. A piece of advice here, please forgo the spoons and use your hands the food tastes a lot better this way.
[flickr]photo:3545688123[/flickr]You finally end the meal with rice and some sambhar or rasam ( or both ) and some curd. The idea here is to talk as little as possible and stuff your face with as much food as you can. And yes, they do serve pappadum for those of you addicted to all things crunchy.
[flickr]photo:3546500200[/flickr]As you can see at the end of my meal my plate looked like a war zone, just be prepared to hit the sack immediately after, as no amount of will power can help you keep your eyes open.
Finishing Up:
I can honestly say the fruit ice cream that was served had to be one of the worst I’ve ever had. They should have just stuck to Indian sweets, it would have complemented the rest of the meal so much better.
The Fine Print:
Type : Restaurant
Cuisine: South Indian
Meal Details: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner
Alcohol? : No
Meal for 2: A “meal” for 2 would set you back around Rs 250
Cards? : Yes
Gripes:
For the price? Not much, though I do have an issue with how long you have to wait outside to get a seat. The speed of service is rather slow given this is a set thali meal.
