I’ve been on the lookout for a good brunch with alcohol, and while most of us have eaten the more extravagant buffets ( at the Leela’s for example ) I was hell bent on finding one that didn’t burn a hole in your wallet.
Bon South ( yes the cuisine is South Indian ) wouldn’t have been my first choice for a sunday brunch. I like a large buffet and I do prefer it to be continental. However at Rs 550 this seemed quite a bargain and the fact that they tossed in unlimited cocktails sealed the deal for me.
Just as a heads up, this review covers only the weekend brunch and not the a la carte menu.
The Experience:
I got to the restaurant around 1 in the afternoon, making it a lunch buffet for me. The staff were extremely courteous and pleasant and our head waiter definitely needed a pat on the back for making us feel welcome and helping us out with the drinks menu.
You have a choice of three seating areas, inside ( where the AC keeps you cool ), the patio outside and finally the rooftop , which was closed when i went there due to some work they were doing. Boo-hoo, i know!
The Starters:
We were given four starters, two non-veg which were fried chicken kebabs ( reminded me of chicken 65 ) and fried squid with just a hint of Indian spices, which i must say was exceptional. For the vegetarians they served fried cauliflower and vadai’s.
[flickr]photo:3280674725[/flickr]I would highly recommend asking them for a side of spinach chutney which really added to the flavours of the starters.
The starters are all freshly made so don’t worry about reheated food.
The Drinks:
They have a truly remarkable selection of wines and i spent a good 15 minutes running through their wine list. You have virtually every type of wine that you could possible want, be it Champagne, Sparkling, White, Red or Rose.
The wine comes from a variety of geographies. The Indian, French, Italian and Australian that we are used to as well as Californian, Chilean, South African and New Zealand stock.
The wine’s available for the Buffet are of course limited.
Being a cocktail buffet i had to do justice to the drinks menu. They have all the standards like the Caiproska, Mojito and so on. But being a south Indian restaurant they have a number of interesting cocktails like the Rasam Vodka, Quick Gun Murugan ( yes i know ! ) and a few others.
Their Kiwi daiquiri is outstanding and I would recommend you ordering one, its made fresh fruit which makes all the difference to the drink.
We managed to try a number of their other drinks as well, the cumint martini ( cucumber and mint martini – which i would ask you to avoid ) , the lemon daiquiri ( which was good ) , the orange clove daiquiri ( again something that wasn’t very good – then again, i don’t like cloves ), green apple martini ( get yourself one ) , the blue berry cocktail ( avoid again ) and finally the Caiproska ( which wasn’t too bad )
[flickr]photo:3281502520[/flickr][flickr]photo:3281516784[/flickr]Their slush cocktails are served so cold you can actually see the ice vapour floating out of your glass, it makes for a very nice visual.
The Main Course:
As a buffet i would have to rate the variety of food very low, if it weren’t for the cocktails, beer and wine i wouldn’t have given the buffet a very high rating.
So for those of you coming here only to eat please keep that in mind.
Hot parottas and appam’s ( don’t forget to order!! ) go very well with the chicken and fish curry. I was a little disappointed with the lack of non vegetarian options but given that it was a 550 rupee buffet i really didn’t want to complain.
[flickr]photo:3281515344[/flickr]Their Biryani was decent but definitely something you can forgo when you have appam’s and chicken curry right next to it.
There is a wide selection of vegetarian dishes like Keerai Kootu ( spinach ) , Potato roast, Brinjal curry , mixed veg curry and some of the best sambhar i’ve had in a long time.
Desert:
The Desert was a big let down as they only had cut fruit, vanilla ice cream and rava laddoo’s. Though i must say the side of chocolate and nuts did make us feel a lot better
This is a buffet you will not want to miss and i would recommend you make a beeline for the restaurant soon before they increase their prices.
